July 22 2011

Oilers lose 14-0

* It was a strong performance by the Oilers defense. They kept the Bucs offense off the scoreboard until there was 4 minutes left in the 1st half.

* After an Oilers turnover late in the 1st, the Oilers defense came up with a huge play to give the Oilers a chance with under a minute to go. It was a Norman Burns (#8) interception, which he returned 60 yards to the Bucs 32. But the Bucs defense held up and the Oilers went into the half down 6-0 (the Bucs 2 pt conversion attempt had failed).

* WR Will Price provided the primary spark for the Oilers offense. He had 6 catches for 81 yards.

* Leading the Oilers defense was linebacker John Martel (#44). Martel was everywhere- tackling runners in the backfield, tracking down the qb whenever he rolled out of the pockets, and laying thunderous hits whenever the Bucs tried to pass over the middle. John played for the Oilers from @ 2003-2006, and then briefly in 2009. This is his first full season back, and he has been a tackling machine for the Oilers, having over 10 tackles in every game so far this season. He's playing like an EFL All Star.

* The Oilers defense played bend but don't break in teh 2nd half. The Bucs had some long drives, but whenever they approached the red zone the Oilers D would clamp down and not allow them to put any points on the boards. DT Karl "Sweet Tea" Wells (#76) was a disruptive force, as was DE Billy Mallory (#58), and DT Mike "GI Joe" Eshner (#95).

* The Oilers had a chance to tie it or take the lead with 4 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, but the ferocious Bucs pass rush (best in the league) forced Myers into an early throw that led to an interception.

* After the Oilers got the ball back one final time and went for it on 4th and long and didn't convert, the Bucs were able to hold onto the ball and scored a final touchdown with under a minute to go. They then went for the 2 point conversion, which Joe Buckley (#30) of the Oilers intercepted but was tackled for a safety in the end zone. Final score: 14-0.
