2010. Game 4

Clinton 34, Oilers 14.

The Randolph Oilers battled with the defending EFL champion Clinton Irish Blizard on Friday, but once again came up short. The Oilers continued to show promise and potential, but also continued to fail to execute and maintain drives.

While the defense had kept the team in games over the 1st 3 weeks, this loss was a team effort. The team fell behind 20-0 early as the offense failed to capitalize on several turnovers the defense generated. But the Oilers did not quit, and scratched their way back into the game in the second half. Will Price continued his offensive onslaught as he made big play after big play on punt returns, kick returns, and making clutch catches. Ryan Myers delivered scoring strikes to Will Price and Bryan Gallo. The offensive line made adjustments in the 2nd half and played one of their best halves of the season. But a few big plays by the Clinton offense and special teams put the game out of reach at the very end, and somewhat inflated the score. Excellent defensive performances were put in by Karl "Sweet Tea" Wells, Assumption, Colby Gallagher, and captain Dan Carroll.

It was clear from this game why Clinton is the defending league champions, and why the Oilers continue to exhibit growing pains. Clinton executed and played excellent TEAM football. The Oilers at times showed that they have the potential to be one of the elite teams in the EFL. But just as frequently they played as 11 individuals and not as one cohesive unit and frequently made mental mistakes. The team currently lacks chemistry and consistency. Fortunately it's easier to correct this than it is to make up for a lack of talent (which the Oilers are not short of). But it takes heart, dedication, and commitment from the entire team.

The only way to correct this problems is for all 40 players to be at every practice, and to listen to your coaches, ask questions, and continue to improve each and every practice. The team realizes some guys occasionally have work and family conflicts. If you can, change your work schedule. If you can't, you MUST call Coach Penn and provide him with the courtesy of letting him know.

No matter how many individual awards a player wins or how great his stats are, guys needs to continue to ask themselves: "what else can I do to become a better player and to make this team stronger?" No one on this team has peaked yet.

When this team starts believing in 11-11-1 and starts doing the little things that champions do (think of Tom Brady in the Super Bowl years and his level of dedication), only then will this team start to see improvement. Once that happens, the team will start to get better each and every week, and as a team we will start to peak as we make our playoff run. This team can do it, but its going to take more of a commitment from each and every player to make it happen.

If players need a reminder about the commitment it takes to be a champion, look no further than how "Coach" Dan Carroll  has approached the game over the last 5+ seasons.
